G. P. R. James (1799-1860) was an English novelist and historian. He served as British consul in Massachusetts and later in Venice while producing historical romances. His works include The King's Highway and Forest Days.

James was Historiographer Royal to William IV and later British consul in Massachusetts, and wrote over a hundred novels - enough for Thackeray to parody him affectionately. The Jacobite politics here are exact.
