This short ebook first explains what is wrong with the commonly held notions that the invention of the wheel had somehow developed from rolling large stone blocks on girders in building monuments, or else that it derives from an adaptation of the potter's wheel. Like many important inventions, the wheel could very easily have been accidentally discovered. This essay goes on to propose a rather unexpected scenario, taking place in connection with one the common crafts of early history, namely the manufacture of personal ornaments.
