The Intelligent Ocean: A New Paradigm for Ocean Science, Governance and the Future of Humanity is a ground-breaking interdisciplinary work that proposes a new scientific framework for understanding the ocean in the twenty-first century. Developed by members of the Ocean Geopolitics Centre, an international research centre within SOAMAR Brasil operating across Portugal, Europe and the Portuguese-speaking world, the book brings together expertise in oceanography, Earth System Science, artificial intelligence, marine robotics, Digital Ocean Twins, geopolitics, governance, economics and ethics.
It argues that the greatest challenge facing ocean science is no longer the collection of data, but the transformation of unprecedented volumes of information into integrated knowledge capable of supporting informed decision-making, sustainable development and responsible stewardship of the marine environment. More than a scientific review, The Intelligent Ocean introduces the concept of Ocean Intelligence as an emerging interdisciplinary paradigm that redefines how humanity observes, understands and governs the ocean.
The book culminates in the Unified Theory of Ocean Intelligence and presents a visionary Research Agenda for Ocean Intelligence (2025-2050), including one hundred grand research questions designed to inspire future scientific investigation and international collaboration.
