Edward Sylvester Ellis (1840-1916) was an American teacher, journalist, and author. After teaching in New Jersey, he worked as an editor and writer in New York. He produced hundreds of dime novels, juvenile adventures, and histories under his own name and pseudonyms, including The Daughter of the Chieftain and The Huge Hunter; or, The Steam Man of the Prairies.

A hunchbacked boy of fifteen builds a man of iron that walks, driven by a steam boiler in its chest, and hitches it to a wagon for the prairies. Ellis was an Ohio schoolteacher who sold his first dime novel at twenty and never stopped, writing hundreds under a dozen names; this 1868 story is the first science fiction the American mass market produced, and every robot since is downstream of it.
