Résumé

When Jessie and Mark Calloway purchase an elegant Victorian home on the edge of a quiet neighborhood, it feels like the beginning of everything they've worked for-a fresh start, a future, a life built together. The house is flawless, almost too perfect, filled with intricate woodwork, tall mirrors, and rooms that seem to stretch farther than they should. Jessie falls in love with it immediately. But the house does not stay still.
At first, it's subtle. A door that won't stay closed. Footsteps in the hallway when Mark is asleep. Objects that appear where Jessie swears she never placed them. Mark dismisses it gently, blaming stress, adjustment, and the medication Jessie has recently started taking for her anxiety. The explanation is comforting-until it isn't. Because the house begins to respond. Jessie hears her name whispered from inside the walls.
Reflections linger a second too long. Rooms feel unfamiliar at night, as if they've shifted while she wasn't looking. The silence inside the house grows heavy, deliberate, almost watchful. Mark remains steady, rational, unmoved-but his distance only deepens Jessie's isolation and then the house begins to learn her. It anticipates her movements. It echoes her thoughts. It reaches her in ways Mark cannot see.
As Jessie's mental state deteriorates, the line between illness and something far more dangerous collapses. Her doctor increases her dosage. Mark becomes convinced the medication is causing everything. But the house has already chosen Jessie, and it will not let her go. By the time Mark finally understands that something inside the house is real, it is no longer a question of saving Jessie-it's a question of escaping what remains.
He leaves. The house does not and it waits for the next family to walk through its doors.
