The Greatest Gift

Glancing at her image, all she could see was a white, sterile bandage covering one side of her face. The temptation was too much and she reached up, pulling the adhesive away from her cheek. Shock coursed through her and there wasn't any doubt in her mind that her fiancé must have visited her-that he'd managed to peek beneath the bandage and see the damage the accident had caused. A jagged red scar ran the length of her face.
As she turned her head, the good side of her face appeared in her line of vision. Other than her cheekbones showing a little more prominence on the undamaged side, her flawless skin and perfectly shaped features were intact. Before the accident, she'd had her fair share of dates and men pursuing her. She doubted whether she'd get a second look from any male now. She reached up and ran her hand through her tousled blonde hair.
It certainly needed washing, but that would have to wait. Her oversized green eyes reflected in the glass, they held a look of sadness, which hadn't been in them before. Her troubling thoughts returned to the opposite side of her face. She couldn't stop the melancholy, as her eyes misted over the sight in the mirror. Kelly felt so miserable the tears flowed down her heated cheeks. She didn't have any family except Derek, and now he'd deserted her when she needed him the most.
She knew he'd left her, although she'd had no confirmation. What other explanation could there be? And who could blame him for leaving?
