Lewis Allison is an interned British officer who is paroled to the castle of a Dutch aristocrat, Baron Von Leyden. While there, Lewis reunites with his childhood sweetheart, Julie. However, she is now married to a German officer named Rupert Von Narwitz. The book explores the complex boundaries between love, duty, and spiritual growth amidst wartime divisions.
