Résumé

My name is Ajit Singh Dosanjh, I was born on September 10 1931If you had asked me about my five year plan when I was eighteen years old, living and working in England was not what I would have envisaged, not even my wildest imagination. Still, at the age of twenty-three, I left my village of Dosanjh Kalan, District Jullundhur, East Punjab, India, and headed off into the unknown. This move from my village could be compared to stepping into a time machine and being propelled forward in time and landing on a somewhat alien planet.
We left behind our simple rural lives of mile upon mile of fields and dirt tracks to walk on paved streets and these certainly were not paved with gold as some had thought. Electric sockets and light switches replaced the kerosene oil which lit our divas, running water from taps replaced water pumped from wells, gas for cooking replaced our open fires. And that is to name just a few of the differences
