Résumé

1956, California. The memories of the brutal conflict of the Second World War linger on. Sylvia Allstatt will never forget how the death rays incinerated the entire population of Berlin, their ashes floating around her terraplane. Sylvia now has a different role within the OSS. The discovery of the alien tech that gave America lethal advantage over the Russians has now allowed users to pilot 'Loops' and re-live the memories of the deceased.
Syvlia is the only living person who can ride the loops. She is the most powerful intelligence weapon America has. But who can one trust in an endless political war game? President Roosevelt's detractors within his government are plotting and while the Russians may not have access to the same tech, they are developing something of their own that has the potential to shift the global landscape irrevocably.
Set in an alternate Cold War landscape and moving from to Istanbul to Berlin to small-town America, this mindbending, inventive and immersive thriller is science fiction writing at its most powerful and prescient - a searing reckoning with war, technology and human frailty.
Ray Nayler is the author of the novels Where the Axe Is Buried and The Mountain in the Sea, which won the Locus Award for Best First Novel, and the novella The Tusks of Extinction, which won a Hugo Award. Born in Quebec and raised in California, Nayler lived and worked abroad for two decades in Russia, Central Asia, the Caucasus and the Balkans.
