For six months, Mercy has been conducting a flawless, silent relationship with John. John, the senior analyst from Accounting, is Mercy's definition of corporate perfection: reserved, impeccably tailored, and possessing a permanent air of brooding sophistication that suggests he harbors deep, romantic secrets. From the safety of her meticulously organized desk, Mercy has cataloged every subtle detail-the way he favors black coffee, the effortless efficiency of his stride, the quiet, focused power of a man who clearly uses the gym and reads classic literature.
He is The Ideal. Mercy's solitary fantasy, however, is about to be violently interrupted by the mandatory annual "Synergy Survival Scramble"-a three-day, no-tech corporate retreat in the damp, unforgiving wilderness of upstate New York. When the teams are announced, Mercy's world short-circuits: she is paired with John. The man who steps off the bus is not the John she knows.
