Résumé

The first murder trial after the collapse may put its creator on trial instead. Grant Heller admits firing the shot that killed Samuel Kessler at a quarantine cordon. He says Daniel Mercer's emergency order required the line to hold. The victim's family calls it murder. Miles Rourke wants swift punishment before winter, while attorney Celia Mercer insists that even the county's most hated man must receive counsel, evidence, and an appeal.
Daniel is asked to build a civilian court from nothing. There is no settled murder law, no independent judiciary, and no agreement over who may sit on a jury. Food is running short, armed factions surround the proceedings, and every day spent seeking justice is a day taken from survival. Daniel wants the trial to separate one officer's violence from the government that employed him. Instead, witnesses and damaged records raise harder questions about vague orders, secret exemptions, altered ledgers, and the people whose suffering never entered the official account.
Heller's defense may depend on proving that Daniel created the conditions for the killing. A verdict could establish accountable law or turn public judgment into revenge. Daniel must decide how much truth his government can survive when the evidence reaches the man who designed it. The County Trial is Book Seven of The Ash Commonwealth, a serialized post-apocalyptic political thriller series intended to be read in order.
