The Captain's House

I witnessed my own birth. I know how that sounds, but it's true. And it's just the beginning. Every summer, my family vacations in Martha's Vineyard, staying at the same weathered house on Bay Street. For eleven years, I've claimed the smallest room-the one that used to be a sewing closet. That's where the pirate first spoke to me. Not a real pirate. A ceramic figure on the mantle. One of four. He told me four people had died in that house, and their restless spirits were tethered to the objects beside him.
