Résumé

Every autumn, the village of Cordel counts who is left to pay. On the rise above the village, where the grass gives out and the chalk road runs white, the Bone-wife keeps her orchard - tree by pale tree, each one grown from a bargain no one dares to break. The children sing rhymes about her the way children sing about everything that would otherwise stop their breath in the dark. And every rhyme ends the same way: the Marrows pay, and so will you.
The Marrows have owed the oldest debt of all since the river first ran dry and a woman of their blood climbed the rise to buy the village its life. That price was never paid in full. So it is paid a little every autumn - in tears, in names, in years off the end of a life - and paid in full when the heart-tree blooms. The heart-tree blooms once in a hundred years. This year, it has bloomed. Seventeen-year-old Maren Marrow knows the rules by heart: don't give your name at the gate, don't eat the fruit, don't answer the same question thrice, and never weep where the witch can see, for tears are coin to her.
She takes the bone needle that has passed down her family for generations, kisses her dying mother and her small brother goodbye, and walks up the chalk road to settle the debt with her own life. But the rules are not the ones the rhymes still sing. The witch is not the monster the village needs her to be. And the debt at the root of everything was paid long ago - by a woman whose name Maren has been wearing all her life.
Lyrical, unsettling, and threaded through with the logic of the oldest fairy tales, The Bone Orchard is a story for readers who love witches with secrets, debts that bite, and heroines who refuse to simply pay. Some prices, once you understand them, cannot be paid twice.
