Écrivain de l'occulte et de l'étrange, spécialiste de l'oeuvre de Poe, J. W. Ocker a reçu le prix Edgar Allan Poe de la meilleure biographie avec Poe-Land : The Hallowed Haunts of Edgar Allan Poe. Il a également écrit les ouvrages A Season with the Witch, and Death and Douglas. Ses articles ont été publiés aux États-Unis dans The Guardian, le Boston Globe, sur CNN, dans le magazine the Atlantic. Il est originaire du Maryland mais vit dans le New Hampshire depuis plus d'une décennie.
