Résumé

You cannot fake a unison. Two strings either agree or they beat against each other, a slow ugly wobble in the air that no one else in the room can name but everyone can feel, and my whole life is teaching old pianos to stop beating and start agreeing. So when my husband moved his hands off me and onto a preservation project across town, I heard it the way I hear a flat third at two in the morning, and I did the one thing I know how to do.
I muted the two strings that were fighting, and I left, and I did not tell Otto Orridge that I was carrying the third. Her name is Anouk. She has his hands. For fifteen months I rebuilt century-old uprights in a rented shop two states away and told myself a clean separation was kinder than a marriage played permanently out of tune, and I was doing fine, I was, until the day the estate that owns the last Krüger concert grand in the country calls the only rebuilder who can save it, and the account manager on the other end of the deal is the man whose daughter is asleep in the next room. Told in her journal and in his, week by week across two years, this is the story of the marriage that went flat, the secret that kept it silent, and the long unbearable work of tuning two people back to true.
Otto does not get to apologize his way home. He gave up on the hardest instrument he ever owned, and now he has to sit in the shop while I show him exactly where it beats, and prove he can hear the difference before I ever let him near the third string. Cosima taught me that you set the fork down, you strike the note, and you do not lie about what you hear. I am done lying about what I hear. The question is whether he is, and whether a man can learn, at last, to stop guessing at the pitch and start listening for the truth.
