Résumé
"Strategy without Tactics is the slowest route to Defeat while Tactics without Strategy is the Noise before the Defeat." - Sun Tzu, The Art of WarThe Art of War, despite of having been written in a bygone geopolitical era over 2, 500 years ago, remains the enduring and timeless classic treatise ever written on military warfare and no war in the history of mankind has been able to escape a thorough scrutiny, in terms of the overall strategies & tactics and the overall conduct of warfare, in the light of its prescribed warfare dimensions and duly enshrined principles. The war in Iran has largely been about America's conventional warfare, driven by hubris as the world's foremost nuclear-armed superpower, vs.
Iran's asymmetric, existential war driven by extensive & meticulous preparation & creation of disruptive capabilities over decades, and the outcomes have been obvious with preparation & disruption getting the better of hubris, as usual, despite Ukraine's repeated reminders to America of its inadequacy & absolute lack of readiness for modern warfare based on asymmetric capabilities. Thus, as demonstrated in the Russia-Ukraine War as well as the U.
S.-Israel-Iran War; the nebulous boundaries separating clear victories from abject defeats are getting further vague & almost indistinguishable now; driven largely by and in complete alignment with the pace of technological evolution, led by asymmetric, autonomous, cost effective & mass-produced and AI-driven capabilities. These disruptive capabilities have virtually enabled the Davids of the world, namely, Iran & Ukraine, lacking even a formal Air Force & Navy as a service branch; to be able to effectively take on the heavyweights & nuclear-armed Goliaths of the world, namely the U.
S. and Russia; for an extended span of time while also inflicting extensive damage to them at highly favorable cost exchange ratios and effectively denying them a chest thumping & fist pumping victory ever and that's the new 'Art of Modern War'... Let's do that activity here to analyze the U. S.-Israel-Iran War in the light of the revered, and almost gospel-like principles of warfare, as outlined by Sun Tzu in his timeless military classic 'Art of War', amid Trump's continued vacillation, as a tactic, between his exhortations for a deal with Iran to formally end the war and threats of a massive, all-out war in case of a renege.
It has been really interesting & worthwhile to reflect and look back at the comparative Art of War, as exhibited by both the sides so far, over the course of an opportunistic & almost unnecessary war originally intended to reshape the broad contours of the entire Middle East region but has only ended up creating a tectonic shift in the traditional, regional power structure geopolitically...
