In the coldest village on Earth, the ground is warming - and it remembers. At the edge of Siberia's largest thaw crater, tusk hunters wake a mammoth that has lain forty thousand years under the ice. Something else comes up with it: a Pleistocene parasite the cold had only put to sleep - and the heat is bringing it back. Paleomicrobiologist Nora Kessler came to Torgut for a single strange sample. Eight years ago she hesitated in the face of an outbreak, and people died.
