Bret Harte (1836-1902) was an American author and poet who worked in California during the Gold Rush and later served as a United States consul in Germany and Great Britain. He is known for his tales of the American West, including the novels Thankful Blossom, In a Hollow of the Hills, and A First Family of Tasajara.
