This story is the memoir of my very brief teaching career, a sad/happy experience. I began teaching at an age when most people have retired; but I was not ready to hang it up quite yet. Nevertheless, my teaching career did come to an end pretty abruptly; so maybe 66 years of age was a little bit old to start teaching middle school. At this point, you are probably nodding your heads and thinking it was the kids.
But if that's your thought, you couldn't be further off the mark. It wasn't the kids at all, or even the teaching. Rather, it was all the other circumstances that an old guy was just not prepared for, such as having to explain to parents why their child was moved to a brand new teacher two weeks into the term; or not even having a classroom of my own. But, with all the problems, I have no regrets for having given it a try; and I would not trade the experience for anything.
