Sample Book Insights:
#1 I was a bully, the leader of a gang, and a street fighter. I had no use for school, except insofar as it had a playground where I could fight or wrestle. I refused to admit that there was anything I couldn't do as well as or better than anyone else.
#2 I inherited my toughness from my father, and my religious training from my mother.
I was openly scornful of those who were pious, and I took great pains not to be thought of as such. #3 I wanted to be a Jesuit, and I wrote a letter to the Polish Jesuits in Warsaw, telling them I wanted to enter the Society over there. I hadn't told anyone at the seminary or at home, and I went to New York to see the Jesuit Provincial. #4 I was finally accepted into the Society of Jesus, and I was happy and excited.
But I was also very stubborn, and when Father Kelly, the provincial, told me I would have to go back to the seminary, I refused. I was forced to leave the Society.
