The city ordinance passed in the 1940s finally outlawed outdoor toilets. #2 Clinton Lee Lewis, then 25, was a diminutive man with a café au lait complexion, wavy black hair, and high cheekbones.
He held several jobs in succession, first as a civilian technician for the Army Signal Corps and later as the proprietor of a series of small businesses. #3 Sam and Sue Cooper were the grandparents of Reginald Lewis. They were both no-nonsense taskmasters who raised eight children of their own and two of their sisters's children. They taught their grandson how to be courteous in his dealings with whites, but never servile. #4 Sam Cooper had little tolerance for racism.
He would often buy his grandson, Lewis, things that would thumb their noses at the Jim Crow laws of Baltimore. He would also go to segregated theaters, where he would watch movies.
