It is the process of feeding large amounts of data into an algorithm, which can learn or detect patterns and then apply these to any new information it encounters. #3 Supervised machine learning is when you have a specific outcome in mind, and you program the algorithm to achieve it. It is similar to some of your math textbooks, in which you could look up the answer at the back of the book. #4 Unsupervised learning doesn't have any notion of what the outcome should be.
It is programmed to approach the data and identify its inherent patterns. It is useful when you want to explore broad areas without knowing where to look or how to get there.
