It is a destination that is also teeming with kitschy shops where tourists and pilgrims can purchase UFO memorabilia. #2 I was traveling with two other people, a professor and his student, to document the belief in extraterrestrial intelligence and the alleged artifacts.
We arrived at our destination and took off the blindfolds. I looked around and laughed at our appearance. James and I looked ridiculous in puffy jackets, tall leather boots, and cowboy hats. #3 The site of the crash was featured in the opening episode of the last season of The X-Files. It was not surprising that it had become a big deal. My belief in the objective truth of the site didn't matter.
It had already become true for millions of people through media. #4 I was there to observe the formation of belief in the artifacts, and to track the various directions this belief took. I was curious to see how the site and the artifacts influenced the beliefs of my research partners, two scientists who were at the top of their games.
