Résumé

This book of twenty-eight stories is a sequel to "Stories to Entertain You. If You Get Bored on Your Wedding Night, " published in 1999.  These stories are highly diverse. One concerns the trial of the author's great, great, grand-aunt, accused of poisoning her husband with arsenic after she was returned from fleeing to the USA. Another concerns a group of poker players discussing the murder of one of their members.
Two stories, with unexpected endings, are quasi-magical- "The Necklace" and The Tale of a Dog." Many stories are imbued with personal feelings of the UK born author, - "The Slide, " "Ode to a Former Girlfriend, " "Pat's Diary, " and "An Interview, " the latter being genuinely apolitical. The shortest story concerns a juror encountering a homeless man with distinct views on the US judicial system. The longest story is a modern update of Shakespeare's "Taming of The Shrew."  One story, "Obsessions, " is a parody of the character, Mr.
Mulliner, whose many tales were written by the famous English Author, P. G. Wodehouse, who spent considerable time in the USA.  Another story, "The Landlord's Tale, " addresses the problems of evicting a recalcitrant residential tenant in California, based on the author's personal experience. The author's study of the narratives of ex-slaves, compiled by the WPA in 1936-38, were a source of two stories in slave times- The Buttered Biscuit, " and "The Sacrifice." Subjects covered in them include, murder, incest, sale, flogging and betrayal.  The author's study of prison recidivism gave rise to one story about a racial integration method and another about resolving that recidivism. The stories are by no means gloomy.
"The Sport of Love, " The Numbers Man, " "Cougars, " "Temptation" and "The Termination" are all joyous in character. The Introduction to this book provides background to how these tales were developed. Some came from short movie scripts written after disparaging sales of prior books. Some came from stories not included in the author's first book and some were rediscovered when the author and his wife moved into a retirement community.
Hope these stories give you as much fun reading as the author did in writing them.
