Résumé

At eighteen Maya Roberts boards a bus with nothing but a duffel bag, eighteen hundred dollars and a desperate need to disappear. She ends up in Millbrook. Population 3, 847. A small, unhurried town where nothing much happens and everyone knows everyone. She wasn't planning to stay. She just needed somewhere to stop. The Starlight Motel becomes her temporary refuge-a faded roadside relic with a broken neon sign and a gruff owner named Roy who asks no questions and charges weekly rates.
Maya takes Room 7, tells herself it's just for a little while, and tries to figure out what comes next. What was supposed to be temporary becomes permanent. Days turn into weeks, weeks into months. Maya takes on a second job at the motel, opens a bank account, builds a small business selling her sketches online. She calls her mother. She makes friends. She falls in love. But the past has a way of following you, even to small towns where nobody knows your name.
Maya must eventually face what she left behind-her mother who misses her, the best friend who won't forgive her, the shame she's been outrunning since she stepped off that bus. Room 7 is a story about what happens after you've made your worst mistake. About the unexpected kindness of strangers and the way small towns can become home when you weren't looking. And sometimes, a broken neon sign and a motel room with a wobbly table is all the foundation you need.
