Speed Bumps is a captivating true story of a woman defying the odds when she was carjacked, run over and left for dead. Clinging to life, breathing through a machine, doctors doubted Maria would survive. In a coma, she underwent multiple surgeries with a number of complications. When Maria finally opened her eyes, her family were overjoyed with relief. However, she had sustained a critical head injury.
Maria had an uphill battle ahead of her. As Maria recovered in hospital, detectives pieced together the circumstances of the attack and tracked down the carjacker. He was arrested and charged. Although Maria was now awake, she had lost the ability to walk, talk, or even feed herself. Months flew by, and finally the court proceedings began. Maria, along with her family, were left speechless when the carjacker pleaded not guilty on the grounds of insanity due to being under the influence of drugs at the time of the attack.
