Résumé

We rely on your support to help us keep producing beautiful, free, and unrestricted editions of literature for the digital age. Will you support our efforts with a donation ? A father is heartbroken after losing his young daughter, whom he thinks of as a beautiful pearl he can never get back. One day, while grieving in a garden, he falls asleep and dreams of a strange, perfect world where he meets her again-only now she appears as a glowing, peaceful young woman in heaven.
She tries to comfort him, explaining that she's safe and happy with God, and that her place there isn't something she earned but rather was given through divine love. The father desperately wants to be with her again, but he struggles to fully understand and accept what she's saying. When he tries to cross a river to reach her, he suddenly awakes. The Pearl was written in the late 14th century by the unnamed Gawain Poet, the same author believed to have written Sir Gawain and the Green Knight .
It's a Middle English poem that reflects strong Christian beliefs, especially grief, salvation, and divine grace, which were central themes of medieval life. The poem is part of the "dream vision" tradition, where a narrator falls asleep and experiences a symbolic dream that reveals deeper spiritual truths. Anonymous was a significant literary figure whose work has stood the test of time. This public domain edition preserves the original text in its entirety, making it accessible to modern readers and scholars alike.
Poetry has always been the most concentrated and powerful form of literary expression. The verse collected in Sophie Jewett represents a high point of the poetic tradition, offering language of beauty and precision that speaks to the deepest levels of human experience.
