The arctic wind starts to mimic human voices, the station's machinery breathes in sync with his own lungs, and he begins to lose hours of time, waking up with nosebleeds and the taste of saltwater in his mouth. When he discovers the journal of the previous operator-who didn't just quit, but vanished into the ice-Mark realizes the signal isn't a distress call.
