London, 1941 to 1942. The sirens rise. The streets burn. And one widow becomes the city's most dangerous secret. Nora Hayes was meant to survive quietly; tending her victory garden in Holloway, trading ration stamps, waiting for the next wail of the sirens. Her husband, Daniel, was gone, buried beneath the rubble months ago. But when strangers move into the bombed-out house next door, their midnight visitors and whispered plans spark more than suspicion.
Drawn into the underground network her late husband once served, Nora finds herself moving through soot-choked streets and collapsing shelters as a weapon of the resistance. Civilians whisper of "the woman in the soot." Collaborators learn to fear her. Even the Ministry isn't sure whether to leash her or let her burn out in the ruins. As the Blitz reaches its breaking point, Nora must dismantle a final plot that could shatter London's already brittle morale; and outwit both enemies and allies who want her silenced.
But when she makes a shocking discovery, Nora faces her deadliest choice yet: remain the city's ghost, or step out of the smoke and fight for a life of her own.
