Résumé
Seasons, a compelling collection of poems written by Hillary Gonzalez, crafts each poem around the seasons of the year, into four distinct parts: Winter, Spring, Summer, and Autumn. Each chapter reflects a stage of life, interwoven with emotional and personal growth. Spring bursts tenderly from the pages, like the budding of cherry blossom petals, with new love. Summer intensifies that passion, like the heat of summer nights.
In Autumn, the poems shift to introspective, as we prepare for the colder months once more. Winter, while it can be the bleakest season of the year, will help the reader to find the strength and space they need to heal, and to help find beauty hidden in even the darkest of places. We begin Seasons with the Winter chapter. There is a feeling of solitude, as it addresses the coldness of the season with the harshness of childhood trauma and past relationship trauma, coupled with the reality of disability and the neurodivergent experience.
Despite its starkness, Winter may help the reader process more than they anticipated. Winter gives the reader time to reflect over their own lives, holding a mirror up to the self. The brutality of winter in the poems serves as a backdrop for exploring personal resilience and the strength found in quietude. Spring in Seasons, represents new beginnings, falling in love, finding love for yourself, and mirroring the blossoming and budding of nature with self-discovery.
It captures the tender moments of saying, "I love you, " for the first time, and the excitement of finding acceptance for yourself. Spring is a balm after the harshness of Winter. These poems are imbued with hope, love, and renewal. Summer intensifies the experiences of Spring, with the passion we feel for our lovers. Each poem delves into the fiery intensity in new and loving relationships, that longing we feel for touch and connection, and the joy of sun-drenched days.
Summer is very bisexual. Autumn brings a tone of reflecting and maturity. We've lived now. We've experienced much of life, and can look back with a contemplative introspection. This chapter is marked by thoughts on past relationships that have matured or altered over time, nostalgic memories, and the acceptance that nothing in this life is permanent. The poems in this chapter, are overlayed with the richness of an autumn sunset.
This first collection of poems by the author, is a triumphant and deeply personal introspective reflection on the queer and neurodivergent experience, growing up in an abusive home, and healing from past relationships. It is a love letter to finding hope, to healing, and learning to love the self. Each poem is a complex interplay between understanding the self, our place in nature, and through the seasons of life.
Through its vivid imagery and emotional depth, Seasons promises to resonate with all who turn its pages, inviting them to explore their own journey through life's seasons.
