Résumé
Bess is a cynic about most things: Politics, motor racing being an actual sport, the keto diet, and Gen Z's need to punctuate every sentence with an emoji??But Bess is particularly cynical about modern love. Her TikTok channel 'Romance is Dead' has one other viewer who's not her mum, and her art installations about her disastrous encounters with men are met with bemusement at best and mockery at worst.
Nobody is interested in her message. Especially not her best friend, Ed, who seems to be quietly amused by her "aggressively closed door" attitude to her love life. Then two extraordinary things happen:1. One of her TikTok videos goes viral and she's suddenly a social media It Girl with the power to influence watchers against the folly of falling for what constitutes modern romance.2. Someone starts leaving her love letters written by a soldier in the Second World War and Bess starts to believe in love again.
There's only one problem: Stuck in the romance of the past, Bess falls for the writer of the letters and forgets that someone in the present is responsible for sending them to her. It's just possible this someone is the quietly amused type. And maybe they have a very good reason for wanting to prove to her that modern romance isn't dead after all.
