Gillian Hall runs her diner in a desert outpost and sees it as the good life. Until the morning Gabriel arrives as her new, enigmatic short-order cook-and she finds herself drawn to him despite every instinct telling her to keep her distance. On the same day, seven alien ships enter Earth's atmosphere. One is destroyed, scattering valuable and dangerous technology across the desert.
