Dez Calloway doesn't ask Ray to join his chop operation. He simply decides Ray already has, and leaves him to work out how much that's going to cost. REPO is a story about competence without a conscience attached to it - about how easily a skill built to do good work quietly starts doing whatever work is put in front of it, and how long a person can tell themselves that adjacent isn't the same as inside. It's about the specific, expensive difference between the story a man tells about himself and the one everyone standing closest to him could actually tell instead.
And it's about a golf course nobody has mowed in fifteen years, slowly and quietly becoming the place where every one of these private, competing plans - a boss's, a bookkeeper's, a detective's, a man who just wanted to stay adjacent - finally collide, in the open, under floodlights, at once. Nobody in this story is ever quite as in control as they think they are. The car always drives itself home eventually.
The only real question is who's actually holding the wheel.
