Résumé

REPORay Fontaine built a quiet, honest business repossessing cars nobody has to touch - a laptop, a satellite handshake, and the vehicle drives itself home. Six years running Fontaine Recovery with his sister Nadia, and he's never once had to raise his voice at a client. Then a routine pull on a dead golf course goes wrong. The car he's come to collect is already up on jack stands in a stripped-out cart barn, half its battery pulled and boxed, and the man standing over it - pastel golf shirt, easy smile, absolutely certain the world will keep bending his way - has just watched Ray kill the vehicle's alarm system in four keystrokes.
Dez Calloway doesn't ask Ray to join his chop operation. He simply decides Ray already has, and leaves him to work out how much that's going to cost. What starts as one favor becomes a slow, deniable slide: a job here, a lockout there, each one small enough to still call himself a bystander. Ray tells himself he's staying adjacent - technical support, not a criminal, still the same man who takes photos of every recovery and never lies to his sister.
He is wrong about most of that, and he knows it a little more each month. He isn't the only one running his own game inside Dez's operation. Lucinda Reyes - the quiet woman with the clipboard nobody bothers to look at twice - has spent two years building something considerably more dangerous than a chop shop: a careful, patient skim that Dez has never once thought to suspect, because he's never once thought to ask what the person actually doing the work might want for herself.
Fig, Dez's oldest and most loyal hand, is about to discover exactly how far that loyalty has been quietly used by two different people at once. Boone says almost nothing and draws exactly one line - the wrong ask can move him, but not far, and never past a certain point. And three counties over, a detective eleven months from retirement is still chasing the ghost of a case he lost years ago: a woman who ran the real books behind a chop operation and walked away clean while everyone was busy watching the man who looked like the boss.
REPO is a story about competence without a conscience attached to it - about how easily a skill built to do good work quietly starts doing whatever work is put in front of it, and how long a person can tell themselves that adjacent isn't the same as inside. It's about the specific, expensive difference between the story a man tells about himself and the one everyone standing closest to him could actually tell instead.
And it's about a golf course nobody has mowed in fifteen years, slowly and quietly becoming the place where every one of these private, competing plans - a boss's, a bookkeeper's, a detective's, a man who just wanted to stay adjacent - finally collide, in the open, under floodlights, at once. Nobody in this story is ever quite as in control as they think they are. The car always drives itself home eventually.
The only real question is who's actually holding the wheel.
