First came the Silence. Then came the Snow. Now comes the Choice. When the lights went out, the world didn't end with a bang, it ended with a hush. A mysterious atmospheric anomaly has suppressed the higher functions of the human brain, turning billions into the "Quiet Ones", shambling, hollow shells of who they once were. Only the "Remnant", the twenty percent of the population immune to the phenomenon, remain awake.
Henry Porter has spent his life preparing for disaster, but nothing could prepare him for this. But Henry soon realizes that the mindless dead are the least of his worries. As Henry transforms his artist daughter, Janette, into a historian of the apocalypse and his gentle son, Mark, into a soldier, the family must decide what they are willing to sacrifice to survive. When a scientist arrives with a promise to cure the Silence, the Porters are offered a lifeline: a high-tech bunker and a chance to save the world. But the cure comes with a terrifying price. Faced with a war on two fronts, a tank battalion at their doorstep and a conspiracy that threatens the free will of the human race, the Porter family must leave their fortress and climb to the roof of the world.
