Résumé
The novella Recluse in a Crowd is mostly about ideas - - how our minds are limited, how seeking truth can be devastating, and how we take for granted nearly everything we experience. A series of unlikely events lead young Tommy to knock on old Tommy's door with a hot pizza. Old Tommy has forty years on the young one, and he's intent on sharing his world view on all kinds of topics. Some impossible things happen in that apartment on New Year's Eve while the two Tommys are teaming up against a bottle of whiskey, things most folks would call miracles.
Old Tommy claims they're not any such thing-they're the rule not the exception. And young Tommy, he advises, should absorb what he's being told and shown to help him with his next forty years. He means the forty years that will start soon after young Tommy voices the same request as old Tommy had spoken forty years earlier. And when old Tommy said soon, he wasn't guessing.
