In the frozen wilderness of Northern Minnesota, three men disappear without leaving behind a single conventional clue. Their cabins are found abandoned, fires still burning, vehicles left behind, and the snow around their homes strangely untouched. Local authorities suspect wolves, bears, or human foul play, but the pattern is too precise to be explained by anything ordinary. Pursuant Inspector Marion Kenway and his partner, Zia Kose, are sent into the remote wilderness to investigate.
What begins as a missing persons case quickly becomes something far more dangerous when their scanners detect traces of an active Agartha portal beneath the frozen ground. The deeper they travel into the forest, the more disturbing the evidence becomes. Impossible tracks appear and vanish without warning. A mysterious black shard of unknown origin is discovered beneath an abandoned cabin. Then something begins calling to them from the darkness, using familiar voices to lure them deeper into the snow.
The investigation leads Kenway and Zia into a confrontation with a dangerous Level One Meta unlike anything they have previously encountered. Capable of changing its appearance and exploiting the perceptions and memories of its victims, the creature turns the wilderness itself into a weapon. Kenway's decades of Army and CIA experience are pushed to the limit as he and Zia attempt to survive an enemy that understands deception as well as they understand tactics.
Armed with Pursuant spring loaded rod weapons and specialized scanning technology, the two Inspectors must locate the hidden portal, contain the Meta threat, and uncover what brought the creature into their world. But the portal may be more important than the creature. What Kenway and Zia discover beneath the Minnesota wilderness suggests that the Agartha network is active far beyond a single location.
