"Awakening" is a deeply personal and philosophical memoir that traces the path of a boy from a poor childhood in Sofia and the legendary "Bodra Smyana" choir to the highest ranks of the Ministry of Interior and the National Security Service (NSS). This is a story about the search for meaning, the clash between the individual and institutions, corruption, power, and the price of personal choice.
Georgi Mitov provides a first-person account of life within the Ministry of Interior system-from his work as a district inspector and human resources officer to his position as Head of Personnel at the NSS. His encounters with key figures, dramatic decisions, and internal conflicts reveal the inner workings of power and the tension between duty, honor, and self-preservation. During the transition years, when old symbols gradually lost their power and new ones had not yet found their place, the author experienced a profound internal crisis.
The five-pointed star that marked his youth and the cross that came to dominate the new era became two symbols between which he sought reconciliation. In this time of searching and doubt, he created his "Star Cross"-initially from clay-as an attempt to find peace and balance. This form, combining the star and the cross, became his inner sanctuary and a bridge between the past and the present. The mere contemplation of this sculpture brought him silence and clarity, and his friends felt the same tranquility upon seeing it.
