Julia Donaldson a grandi dans le nord de Londres au sein d'une grande famille où tout le monde aimait la lecture. Julia a ainsi commencé à écrire très jeune. Après ses études à l'université de Bristol, elle poursuit une carrière d'auteur de chansons. Son association avec Axel Scheffler, en 1993, donne naissance à de nombreux succès tels que Gruffalo, devenu un grand classique. Julia Donaldson a été décorée, par la Reine, de l'Ordre de l'Empire britannique. Elle a également occupé jusqu'en 2013 la fonction de "Children's Laureate", Ambassadrice du livre pour enfants. Rédactrice pour la BBC, le théâtre et l'industrie du disque, elle est enfin très investie, avec son mari Malcolm, dans des représentations théâtrales pour enfants.
