The stability Huxley envisioned was a stagnant pool. He often told an anecdote about a friend who was obsessed with the idea of a perfect day, planned down to the minute. Huxley noted that by the end of such a day, his friend looked not refreshed, but utterly exhausted by the lack of spontaneity. This served as a microcosm for his fictional state. In the World State, every impulse is satisfied instantly.
There is no desire, because there is no waiting; there is no passion, because there is no frustration. Huxley saw that by removing the obstacles to happiness, the World Controllers had actually removed the capacity for depth.
