Then the Cedar Key Heritage Festival gets robbed. By pirates. Real criminals wearing ridiculously convincing pirate costumes. They release clouds of red smoke, steal a quarter-million dollars, and escape across the Gulf on pirate-themed jet skis while an enormous alligator gives chase. And suddenly Gumbo has two cases. One involves recovering stolen festival money. The other involves a supposedly lost Spanish treasure ship, a suspicious "privateering charter" from landlocked Liechtenstein, and a fortune in gold supposedly buried somewhere in the Florida wetlands.
Then they find a human finger bone. And everything changes. As Gumbo, Ellie Rodriguez, Captain Beignet the basset hound, and a cast of increasingly bizarre Florida characters chase the clues, they discover that the treasure isn't just about gold. It's about control of the Florida coastline. A powerful development operation called Operation Sandcastle is using political influence, shell companies, fake robberies, and hired criminals to gain access to protected coastal land-and the ancient maps Gumbo uncovers could expose the entire scheme.
Then a hurricane hits. Gumbo finds himself trapped in a lighthouse with pirates, corporate criminals, stolen treasure maps, and the people behind the conspiracy. And that's when things get really weird. Because the ultimate treasure may be hidden somewhere nobody expected... Inside the walls of Cedar Key's brand-new convention center. Now Gumbo and his unlikely allies have one chance to expose the conspiracy, recover the lost treasure, and stop the people trying to pave over Florida's coastline.
And naturally, their plan involves a pirate costume party, a building full of stolen Spanish gold, a bunch of former criminals, and one very irritated twelve-foot alligator. And just when Gumbo thinks the case is finally over... Captain Beignet finds another Spanish gold coin buried beneath the detective's own stilthouse. Because in Cedar Key, apparently even the treasure isn't finished with Gumbo.
