Résumé
Die Studie widmet sich der Untersuchung der vorchristlich-autobiografischen Selbstdarstellung des Paulus im Kontext hellenistisch-römischer und frühjüdischer Selbstinszenierungsstrategien. Sie zeigt, dass Paulus gezielt zeitgenössische rhetorische Mittel zur apologetischen Profilierung seines Ethos einsetzt, um Autorität und Glaubwürdigkeit zu sichern. Zugleich fällt seine partiell ungewöhnlich negative Darstellung der eigenen Vergangenheit aus dem antiken Rahmen literarischer Selbstinszenierung.
Diese bewusste Kontrastierung dient der Hervorhebung der göttlichen Gnade und Berufung.
Durch den Vergleich mit Philo, Josephus, Augustus, Nikolaos von Damaskus und Plutarch wird die Selbstapologetik des Paulus präzise im literarischen Kontext seiner Zeit verortet und zugleich als eigenständiges, theologisch motiviertes Konzept profiliert. [Paul Before Damascus. Autobiographical Accounts Against the Backdrop of Hellenistic-Roman Self-Representation] The study examines Paul's pre-Christian autobiographical self-portrayal in the context of Hellenistic-Roman and early Jewish self-presentation strategies.
It shows that Paul deliberately uses contemporary rhetorical devices to apologetically profile his ethos in order to secure authority and credibility. At the same time, his partially unusual negative portrayal of his own past falls outside the ancient framework of literary self-presentation. This deliberate contrast serves to emphasise divine grace and calling. Through comparison with Philo, Josephus, Augustus, Nicholas of Damascus and Plutarch, Paul's self-apologetics is precisely situated in the literary context of his time and at the same time profiled as an independent, theologically motivated concept.
