Operation Cobra was underway. Four Infantry divisions and the Second and Third Armored took part in it, all of which were made up of the Seventh Army Corps. It was twelve days since the Allies completed their landing in Normandy. The bridgehead was secured, but the US troops were still moving in a narrow strip of land, insufficient to contain the flood of reinforcements, weapons and supplies that arrived every day, and it was necessary to expand it.
