Résumé
A true-life pictorial journey through a vanishing Africa. Born in 1925 in the colonial town of Livingstone, Northern Rhodesia, Pieter is the son of Afrikaners-survivors of the Anglo-Boer war-seeking a new beginning far from the shadows of history. But it's not Afrikaans he first speaks, but Lozi, the language of his nanny and closest companion, a Lozi tribesman who opens his eyes to the rhythms of the land. Set in an africa teeming with wild life, where lions roam freely, elephants graze near rivers, and crocodiles hunt in the shallows, Pieter's childhood unfolds beneath vast skies and the distant thunder of steam trains and imperial flying boats. Captured in surprisingly clear photographs taken with an old Kodak box camera, this extraordinary collection-spanning 1925 to 1950-offers a rare an intimate window into a continent in transition.
The images, taken by Pieter and his parents, document a boy's life shape by two cultures, set against a backdrop of breathtaking beauty and quiet resilience. One Regret is not only a coming-of-age story, but a tribute to a time, a place, and a way of life that has all but disappeared.
