Résumé

One Life, No Rehearsal: A Surgeon's Memoir of Healing, Heartbreak, and Legacy chronicles the remarkable career of Dr. Donald Wiss, a nationally recognized orthopedic trauma surgeon whose contributions have shaped modern fracture care. From modest beginnings in Detroit, Dr. Wiss rose through the academic ranks after earning his BS at Michigan State University and his MD from Wayne State University School of Medicine.
A transformative orthopedic rotation led him to pursue a residency at the University of Pittsburgh, followed by elite postgraduate fellowships at Oxford University and in Germany, where he honed his skills in fracture management and trauma reconstruction.  Spanning four decades, his clinical journey includes influential posts at Boston City Hospital, LAC+USC Medical Center, the Southern California Orthopedic Institute (SCOI), and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he served as Director of Orthopedic Trauma.
In these demanding settings-especially the overcrowded public hospitals of Los Angeles-Dr. Wiss became a tireless advocate for trauma patients, underserved populations, and the surgical residents he mentored.  His memoir sheds light on the evolution of orthopedic trauma surgery, from AO technique adoption to innovations in biologic augmentation for nonunions. As a past president of the Orthopedic Trauma Association and editor of multiple editions of Master Techniques in Orthopaedic Surgery: Fractures, Dr.
Wiss shares firsthand the challenges and triumphs behind landmark research, including his widely cited studies on recalcitrant nonunions of the femur, tibia, humerus, and clavicle. Interwoven with clinical stories are moments of humor, humility, and humanity-from navigating hospital politics to sharing a cramped fellowship apartment with his young family, to last-minute adventures and cross-cultural exchanges with international surgical pioneers.  The narrative crescendos in a deeply personal chapter detailing his wife Deborah's early-onset Alzheimer's diagnosis and his subsequent role as a full-time caregiver.
His reflections on this experience are unsparing yet filled with grace, revealing the emotional complexities of loss, love, and resilience.  In recognition of the profound toll of Alzheimer's disease, Dr. Wiss is donating all proceeds from this book to OPICA, a leading outpatient day program in Los Angeles that supported his wife in her early dementia care journey.
