Résumé

Of the millions of creatures that share the earth with us, few are more beloved than the dolphins. Throughout history, dolphins have played a significent role in shaping our philosophy and helping us to better understand and appreciate the natural world. Dolphins have unknowingly becomesymbols of concern for the environment, and their joyous lifestyle, centered on friendships within their complex social structure, is something to be admired and emulated.
Yet for all the admiration we have for dolphins, and the inspiration they instill in us, little is known about how they live their lives, and that is the basis and reason for this book.   Just like people, individual dolphins possess their own distinct personalities. Some are bold, some are shy. Some are resolute, while others are more care-free. Yet they all have one thing in common: they are highly intelligent social animals with a well-defined sense of self-awareness.
The more we learn about dolphins, the more we realize that there is most assuredly an alien form of sophisticated intelligence right here on planet earth.
