Xavier Vandus and Donavin Eshe are wanted by the most powerful military in the universe. Thankfully, they know just the place to hide. Stoya is a sheltered city on stormy Hntia, a planet soaked with Slavs. While its interior may be loyal to the Echoes, its abandoned outskirts are full of enough criminals to protect them from capture. Or so they think. Things get complicated when an Echo veteran tags along, drawing unwanted attention and rousing Stoya's less than friendly exiles.
The outcasts need to put their differences aside, and quickly, as Xavier's pursuer-- the Eminent Herald-- could arrive at any time with her followers in tow. While his lowly crimes seem due to be forgotten, there's been an unusual air to Eminent's actions. She wants the runaways from Adise Dire Dawa so desperately that it seems like no one-- not even her own family-- can stop her. Will the fugitives unite against their common enemy, or will they scatter under the boot of oppression? Will Donavin's family survive the Echo raids back home, or has he already seen them for the last time? And will Xavier unravel Eminent's motives before she can capture him, or will someone else get to him first?
