Norrit and Hale and the Ash on the Wind

One night in the balloon basket, the air smells of ash.     Norrit and Hale follow a nightly routine: gather star dust and moon dust in a big red balloon. Use the harvest to fuel wish-granting machinery at Starry-Eyed Station that serves requests of grandparents for their grandchildren (and sometimes requests of grandchildren for themselves).     But one night, as they attend to the collection route, smoke fills the sky.     What they find in the morning surprises them.
