Jahrzehnte des Krieges in Afrika, auf dem Balkan, am Golf und im Nahen Osten, Krieg in der Ukraine, Krieg in Mexiko, Krieg in Afghanistan. Die USA haben sich weltweit zurückgezogen, das Vakuum füllen andere. Europa sollte sich dieser Realität stellen, um nicht immer wieder von ihr überrascht zu werden; dies aber nicht auf dem Weg zurück in die Machtspiele des 19. Jahrhunderts, sondern auf den Wegen des Völkerrechts und durch die Errichtung von und die Mitwirkung an Systemen gemeinsamer Sicherheit.
Liegt aber nicht gerade das Völkerrecht am Boden? Wer glaubt noch an die UN-Charta? Christen glauben nicht an die Charta, sondern an Gott und die Macht der Nächstenliebe. Zu diesem Glauben aber gehört das Bekenntnis zu Menschenwürde und Menschenrecht und zur zivilisierenden Kraft des Völkerrechts. An Ethics of Political Force] Decades of war in Africa, the Balkans, the Gulf and the Middle East, war in Ukraine, war in Mexico, war in Afghanistan. The U. S. has withdrawn worldwide, and others are filling the vacuum. Europe should face up to this reality in order not to be surprised by it again and again; but this not on the way back to the power games of the 19th century, but on the way of international law and through the establishment of and participation in systems of common security.
But isn't it precisely international law that is lying on the ground? Who still believes in the UN Charter? Christians do not believe in the Charter, but in God and the power of charity. But this faith includes a commitment to human dignity and human rights and to the civilizing power of international law.
