Novel berbahasa Jawa ini berlatar dua keluarga keturunan ningrat di Yogyakarta. Kisah perjodohan dua anak dari dua keluarga ningrat ini sangatlah lancar dan ideal. Namun, suatu peristiwa yang tanpa unsur kesengajaan, menjadikan Danardana sang suami menuduh istrinya berlaku serong. Hingga keduanya akhirnya berpisah tinggal. Dan Surtikawati, sang istri dengan tenang membuktikan bahwa dia bukanlah perempuan yang mudah tergoda, ia bersumpah tidak akan menjalin hubungan dengan siapapun selain suami pertamanya itu.
