Catherine Helen Spence (1825-1910) was a Scottish-born Australian novelist, journalist, and reformer who emigrated to South Australia in 1839. She worked as a teacher and writer in Adelaide and was an advocate for women's suffrage and proportional representation. Her novel Mr. Hogarth's Will (1865) examines women's economic independence.

Spence emigrated from Scotland to South Australia at fourteen and became the colony's conscience: its first woman novelist, its first female political candidate, and the campaigner who gave the world proportional representation.
